An Alternative Reality Game is a ‘game’ played over a range of platforms (email, telephone, post, but cheifly the internet) often in ‘real-time.’ By that, I mean they can be events that occur over a certain timeframe, and cannot be accessed once this time has passed. The key, defining ludic element of an ARG is that its ludic elements are unclear – players are unsure whether they are playing a game or not, as the game space, or magic circle can be wider than anticipated or realised. So, really, this could be the first post in a personal ARG, I’ve decided to play with you. This wikipedia entry will give you some background. I suppose I could paraphase it for you, but what would be the point? |
